How to take a driver's education course in Minnesota

The state of Minnesota requires most driver's to participate and successfully complete a driver's education course in Minnesota. The driver's education course in Minnesota must be approved by the state.

Who is required to take a driver's education course in Minnesota:

  • Minnesota residents under the age of 18 must hold a learner's permit for a minimum of six months, and also complete a State-approved driver's education program before applying for a new license.
  • Minnesota residents 18 and older who have never held a license from Minnesota, or any other US state or foreign country, must hold a learner's permit for a minimum of 90 days, or complete a State-approved driver's education program before applying for a new license.

Driver's education courses in Minnesota are given at private schools and public schools, the content is the same at either place, just make sure the driver's education course you choose is approved by the Minnesota department of public safety and licensed by the Driver and Vehicle Services.
