How to get your New Jersey Learners permit

Receiving your learner's permit in New Jersey is quite the process. There are many different requirements before being issued a New Jersey learner's permit.

  • The minimum age is 16 years old to apply for a New Jersey learner's permit.
  • You have never been licensed to operate a vehicle before, however if you are new to New Jersey, and have been licensed outside the state of New Jersey, but your driver's license there has been expired for longer than six months.

If you are 16 years old there is a three part process to obtain your New Jersey learner's permit, called the early bird road.

The three part process includes:

  • Student learner's permit (minimum six months of supervised driving).
  • Provisional license (minimum one year of restricted but unsupervised driving).
  • Basic driver license (must be 18 years old).

To apply for a Student Learner's Permit in New Jersey:

  • Get a copy of the New Jersey driver's manual.
  • You will need to have a parental consent form signed if you are younger than 18 years of age.

Make sure you bring the following with you:

  • Proper Identification is mandatory (civil birth certificate, a US Passport, a US Department of State birth certificate, US adoption papers, or a certificate of naturalization or certificate of citizenship).
  • Proof that you are enrolled in a driver's education course.
  • $10 learner's permit fee.

When you get to the MVC Agency you will be given a knowledge test as well as a vision test. After passing both tests you will be issued a New Jersey student learner's permit.

The New Jersey student learner's permit comes with certain restrictions:

  • You will not be allowed to drive between 5a.m.-11p.m. When you are driving you are required to be with someone who is a licensed driver older than 21 and has had a valid driver's license for at least three years. Make sure they are always sitting next to you.
  • The use of any electronic devices while driving is strictly prohibited.
  • It is mandatory to wear your seat belt at all times while operating a motor vehicle.

When you turn 17 and have your student learner's permit for at least 6 month, accident free, the next step will be to apply for your provisional license.You must pass the 6 Point ID Verification and you also need to pass the road test.

The provisional license has a few restrictions you must follow:

  • You will not be allowed to drive between 12:01 a.m. and 5 a.m.
  • If you want to drive with someone who is not a member of your household you can only have one person at a time in the car with you.
  • The use of any electronic devices while driving is strictly prohibited.
  • Seat belts must be worn at all times.
